Arcade Violence
With its pit-hopping and vine-swinging, Activision's Pitfall: The Lost Expedition offers a fun explorer-themed game that is a descendant of that famous Atari title from decades ago. It's a fun platform romp through an arcade jungle that has a great theme and wide appeal.
As in previous incarnations, the game stars one Pitfall Harry-explorer and adventurer. Players embark on an adventure to rescue a lost expedition and more. On the Game Boy Advance, the title is very different from Activision's versions for the consoles (Daytrum review of the PS2 version).
The entertaining game is mostly a side-scroller. Players are asked to run, jump on platforms, hop over fast-moving obstacles, fight bosses, swing from vines, swim, use a slingshot and more. In all, there are 27 levels and various mini-games.
The game serves a light, humorous tone throughout and never takes itself seriously. The graphics are colorful and well done. Interestingly, the graphics in the Game Boy Advance version are more cartoon like than that in the console versions. As a result, the Game Boy Advance has a strikingly different look and feel.
Pitfall: The Lost Expedition is not a bloody game, but it's a violent one with Harry dying a thousand deaths, whether it's being eaten by alligators, falling into deep pits, losing to his enemies and more. While Pitfall is not the best arcade adventure for the Game Boy Advance, players who love platform titles should have fun with this one.
