A solid shooter, Nintendo's Star Fox: Assault delivers the goods with its furry, and rather cuddly cast of characters. It's a fun, but violent title that should be enjoyed by all. For those who recall the old Star Fox 64, the action in the title is reminiscent of its roots in this classic.

It seems that several years after a disaster was narrowly averted on Dinosaur Planet, Lylat Central Command detects a new threat that's spreading throughout the galaxy. As a result, the Star Fox team, which includes Fox McCloud, Slippy Toad, Peppy Hare and Falco Lombardi, is sent in to eradicate the growing menace.

Players get to fly in Arwings, soar through space and battle waves of strike fighters. The games also takes to the ground with Fox McCloud himself fighting on foot and in tanks. Powerful weapons including automatic blasters, sniper rifles and shoulder-launched rockets. Aerial combat, which is reminiscent of that in earlier Star Fox games, is lots of fun. The land sequences, however, are clearly secondary.

The game features a fun single-play mission, and players may join the fight with up to three others, or battle it out in a four-player split screen. Graphics are detailed and attractive. As you would expect from a shooter, the game is violent, but not bloody.

Star Fox: Assault delivers a satisfying and fun shooter. Those who enjoyed earlier versions of the game will like what they find here. And those who are new to the Star Fox world should be pleasantly entertained.
