Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 lets you build and manage your own amusement park, and notably, lets you build your own virtual roller coasters for customers to ride. In essence, Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 is a first rate SimCity-style game that offers an amusement park as its setting. Here you're in charge of building an amusement park from scratch or improving and expanding an existing park with new and exciting rides and attractions. Your ultimate goal is to keep guests happy and the park profitable.

Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 is the sequel to the very popular Roller Coaster Tycoon that offers some 25 new roller coasters that represent those from Six Flags amusement parks. A new scenario editor lets you design your own scenarios that include playing with or without money constraints, setting parks in locations of your own design, setting goals and more. However, the options here are surprisingly limited.

A roller coaster designer mode that lets you build a coaster without having to worry about cost constraints, park guests, and ride maintenance. This is a welcome addition that lets you be creative without worrying about the business aspects of running a park. The game offers park maps that are four times larger than those of the original game, and more options for setting in-park buildings. The game also offers new roller coaster types that include multi-dimension, giga, inverted impulse, and more, as well as new themes that include giant garden, wild west and pirates.

While the game offers improvements, working with uneven terrain is still clumsy and tunneling is even more of a pain. Graphically, the sequel looks much like those in the original Roller Coaster Tycoon-a game that is almost four years old. The dated graphics could have used a major upgrade.

Infograme's Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 has lots of momentum behind it, but it's not that much of an upgrade over the earlier version. Those who have never discovered the joys of the original Roller Coaster Tycoon will undoubtedly enjoy the sequel. And those who are fans of the original game will generally like what they find in Roller Coaster Tycoon 2. However, the sequel mostly looks and plays like the original, and isn't the game that we fans have been patiently waiting (and waiting) for. But aside from this, it's an excellent family game.
