Arcade violence
With two main characters and crazy puzzles, THQ's Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy successfully transports gamers into a magical world of action, adventure and mystery. Set in an original universe that's loosely based on Ancient Egypt, players set out on a quest to explore new worlds, uncover dark secrets and foil the evil plans of Set, the evil brother of Tutankamen. It's an excellent action adventure game.
As in most action adventures, players solve challenging puzzles, make their way through dungeons and battle lots of enemies. But here, players navigate through the game as two heroes on separate journeys.
Players guide the headstrong Sphinx, a demi-god, as he seeks to find the stolen mystical crowns. The other character, the Mummy, has the ability to solve complex puzzles and can set himself on fire. Since he's technically dead, Mummy can't be hurt or killed. And the fact that Mummy can't be killed brings up some intriguing puzzles with funny solutions.
The game's camera is sometimes clumsy, but workable. The graphics are excellent and serve expressive characters and lush backdrops. Because this is an action adventure game, there's lots of combat and violence, but it's mostly cartoon-like in style.
Despite the corny graphics on the package that made us think we were reviewing a kid-oriented platform game, we found Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy to be an entertaining action adventure with great graphics, puzzles and combat. Gamers will have fun wrapping themselves into this one.
