Based on the popular X-Files, Vivendi Universal's The X-Files: Resist or Serve offers a compelling third-person horror game that feels like an entertaining, interactive episode of the television show. As such, the title appeals mostly to the show's many fans, but stands on its own as a good horror game.

Set in the show's seventh season, Mulder and Scully travel to the small Rocky Mountain town of Red Falls to investigate a string of brutal murders that are ultimately linked to ghost sightings, the undead, and other paranormal phenomena. The agents then pursue an inhuman killer to a secret research facility in the Siberian wasteland and into the depths of a buried alien spacecraft. It's just another day in the life of Scully and Muldar.

The X-Files: Resist or Serve serves three interwoven episodes that were created by the producers of The X-Files. As such, the storyline fits into the timeline of The X-Files' seventh season and the experience is authentic with X-Files characters, music and voiceovers by David Duchovny, Gillian Andersen and the rest of the cast.

Players get to be one of the two main characters, Agent Mulder or Agent Scully, each with their own abilities, and interact with familiar characters and environments that have been faithfully recreated from the television show. The game serves lots of puzzles and some fighting, and the experience is different, depending on the character that is played.

The game looks great and characters look much like their television counterparts. The only downside is that the camera is sometimes clumsy and doesn't allow players to adequately view the environments. Fans of the series will enjoy unlocking DVD-style extras that include artworks, storyboards and more.

The X-Files was a compelling television show and it makes for a great game setting. Fans of the series won't want to miss X-Files: Resist or Serve.
