The webbed-wonder returns
in the aptly named Ultimate Spider-Man. This first rate title offers an innovative
and compelling look and a variety of activities that will keep gamers and
Spidey fans glued to their consoles. As the name implies, the title offers
the finest Spider-Man experience in a game to this date.
Gamers get to play as both Spider-Man and Venom, the villain. And with two characters, there are two distinct combat systems that allow for different fighting styles and techniques. Spider-Man relies on his web-slinging and acrobatic moves while Venom relies on brute force and amazing leaping and brutal regeneration abilities.
The game offers vast, free-roaming environments in Manhattan and Queens. Players are free to explore the areas and take on challenges that include combat missions, rescues and check point-based races. And there are also entertaining fights and activities against a number of comic book characters. Making cameo appearances are Wolverine, Human Torch, Electro, Green Goblin and more.
The graphics are amazing and make the game look much like a comic book. In particular, the cutscenes, which tell the story, feature animated comic book panels that bring the story alive. The voice acting, while it doesn't feature celebrity voices, is excellent. And the game has a solid underlying story.
The "Ultimate" in "Ultimate Spider-Man" is fitting. Activision has successfully created a compelling and entertaining title that's based on the Spider-Man world. This game does just about everything a spider [man] can.
