With online play via Xbox Live and solid graphics, Microsoft's Inside Pitch 2003 initially looks to be a league contender. But take a closer look, and the game has definite limitations. This Xbox exclusive doesn't offer a bad ball game, but there are clearly better Xbox baseball games.
In addition to the usual abilities to draft and trade players and take a team through a full season, as well as create customized players and play arcade ball by pitching, batting and fielding, the game supports Xbox Live so gamers may download roster updates and play one-on-one exhibition matches-something no other Xbox baseball game currently offers. We particularly liked the game's Championship Challenges that let players replay key events in the most recent Major League season. This includes breaking the 11-inning All-Star game tie, equaling Shaun Green's 19 total bases in a single game, and more.
On the downside, the game is rather shallow. The title offers no minor league manipulations, salary negotiations, or multiple-season play. In addition, batting doesn't always reflect the capabilities and stats of the real player and the game can be frustrating because there's a lag time when controlling base runners and fielders.
The game looks very great with its faithfully recreated stadiums and players. Audio is also excellent-in particular, the play-by-play commentary by Joe Buck and Tim McCarver sounds much like the announcing in a real ball game.
For a debut game, Inside Pitch 2003 has its share of rough edges. Undoubtedly, Microsoft will tweak this game in the coming year and introduce a better one next season. Until then, if players want to play ball on an Xbox and can live without online play, they should check out Acclaim's All-Star Baseball 2004.
