One of the best cooperative games that we've played, it's too bad that Vivendi Universal Games' Hunter: The Reckoning Redeemer is so violent. The game is a fantastic one that lets up to four play together on a single, not split, screen.

The sequel to the first rate Hunter: The Reckoning, the game returns players to the White Wolf gothic fantasy world where an elite team of hunters is trying to stop an army of monsters from taking over the town of Ashcroft. It turns out that the town's largest employer, Genefex, has been lacing products with supernatural poison that is turning consumers into monsters. Thus, a team of five Hunters, with the new young Hunter, Kaylie, have to defeat the looming evil and discover the truth about Genefex.

The game is essentially a third-person shooter that displays all of the characters on a single screen-much as in the Gauntlet games. As a result, players have a blast playing cooperatively-hacking and slashing in battle, sharing power-ups and resources. If you are familiar with the first game, the action and gameplay are much the same.

New features include another playable character, new combat moves for all characters, as well as new spells, weapons, monsters and bosses. The game is a lot of fun, particularly when four play together, which results in a lot of onscreen action. In fact, the multi-player action makes single-play pale in comparison. The graphics are excellent and an improvement over that in the earlier game.

Hunter: The Reckoning Redeemer is a great game that's best played with others. It's too bad that it's violent and we can't recommend this one to families. However, older gamers can have a blast with it.
